Joan Horbiak, RD, MPH
President of Health & Nutrition NetworkWhether it's discussing breaking nutrition news on television or conducting biotechnology training seminars for health professionals, one thing is clear...Joan Horbiak is committed to providing the public with sound food and nutrition information.
Horbiak is president and founder of Health and Nutrition Network, a consulting group specializing in the development of food and nutrition education programs for worksites and the media. Today, her programs have been used nationwide. Her ability to translate technical terminology into everyday language has led her to complete over 500 media interviews, including CNN, CNBC, USA Today, The New York Times and The Daily News. A consultant in the field of biotechnology, she has spent the past three years training health professionals on "The Future of Foods" and the role of biotechnology in today's agriculture systems.
A registered dietitian with more than 18 years of experience, Horbiak held a four year term as a Media Ambassador for the 70,000-member American Dietetic Association (ADA) and led ADA's workshops on nutrition entitled "Take The Lead." She currently serves as a faculty leader for ADA's nationwide Physician Nutrition Education Workshops. Horbiak also discusses nutrition on NBC's Weekend Today in New York Show and is a frequent guest on television shows across the country. Recently, she wrote the book 50 Ways To Lose Ten Pounds with the highly acclaimed Duke University Diet and Fitness Center and revised their clinical program. In addition, her speaking engagements to health professionals and consumer groups have extended beyond the United States to as far as the Orient.
Prior to forming Health and Nutrition Network, Horbiak was a cardiovascular research nutritionist for University of Pittsburgh. She worked for three years on the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial and served as a faculty leader for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's workshops on Nutrition in Cardiovascular Disease. She has also collaborated with Dr. Theodore Van Itallie, world renowned obesity researcher, in the development of weight management programs.
Horbiak holds a B.S. degree in Nutrition from the Pennsylvania State University, completed a nutrition internship at the University of California Hospitals and Clinics, then earned a master's degree in Public Health Nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh. Her achievements in nutrition earned awards from the University of Pittsburgh and Mead Johnson Laboratories.
