Third Annual
Soyfoods Symposium
Speakers
Dr. Paolo Fanti, MD, University of Kentucky
Dr. Paolo Fanti is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. He is a member of the Division of Nephrology, Bone and Mineral Metabolism, and Director of the Internal Medicine Subspecialty Clinics and of the Multidisciplinary Renal Stone Clinic.
Besides maintaining an active practice in general nephrology, hypertension and renal stone disease, Dr. Fanti has pursued research in the field of mineral balance and bone health since 1981. He has conducted studies in humans, experimental animals and cells in culture. His earlier contributions to this area of medicine have included the development of new blood tests for the study of bone in health and disease, the characterization of the toxic effect of certain trace minerals, such as aluminum, on bone health, and the definition of the therapeutic role of biologically active forms of vitamin D on bone. More recently, Dr. Fanti's attention has focused on the study of the health effects of plant food constituents. Specifically, he is active in the investigation of the effect of the phytochemicals, small chemicals that are naturally present in edible plants, on bone health and on the general well-being of humans. Since 1997, Dr. Fanti has reported on the beneficial effect of the soy photochemical genistein in the prevention of bone loss in postmenopausal experimental animals, and on the presence of high levels of the phytochemicals genistein and daidzein in the circulation of patients with renal failure who include relatively small amounts of soy products in their diet. Dr. Fanti's current research effort is aimed at better characterization of the beneficial effects of genistein and daidzein after menopause, at revealing the potential benefits of these phytochemicals in renal failure patients and at understanding possible therapeutic benefits of diets rich in soy in patients who suffer from recurrent kidney stones formation.
