Belinda M. Smith, M.S., R.D., L.D.

Lexington, KentuckyBelinda Smith began her academic career at Eastern Kentucky University where she obtained a bachelors degree in nutrition and dietetics in 1984. She interned at Methodist Hospital of Indiana, and upon returning to Kentucky completed the masters program in Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Kentucky.
In 1987 Mrs. Smith joined the research team of Dr. James W. Anderson at the University of Kentucky as a research dietitian and nutrition research coordinator. She is involved in conducting clinical trials in the areas of nutrition, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension. She has coordinated numerous metabolic diet studies in the areas of fiber and soy protein. Mrs. Smith has co-authored 15 journal publications and abstracts on the effects of nutrition on various metabolic conditions.
In addition to the research, Mrs. Smith is involved in outreach activities to translate research findings into practical applications for health professionals and the public. She has presented lectures and workshops, provided media interviews, and contributed articles to the lay press. She serves as consultant to the HCF Nutrition Research Foundation assisting in promotion, consumer request, recipe testing, and contribution to popular books and professional manuals. She served as contributing editor for Diabetes in the News magazine from 19901994.
Mrs. Smith is a member of several professional organizations. She serves on the advisory board for the dietetics program at Eastern Kentucky University, and has held several positions, including secretary and president, of the Bluegrass District of the Kentucky Dietetic Association. She was honored in 1993 as Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year for the state of Kentucky.
Mrs. Smith is an active member of Rosemont Baptist Church in Lexington where she teaches a pre-school Sunday school class and vacation Bible school.
