Breast cancer is more prevalent in women eating high fat, low fibre diets. Phytooestrogens, weak oestrogens found in the high fibre diets of Asian women, are reported to protect against breast cancer development and low urinary excretion of phytooestrogens has been reported in Finnish and American postmenopausal breast cancer patients compared to control women.
We have measured serum phytooestrogens using isotope dilution gas chromatography- mass spectrometry in healthy controls (n=13), women with breast cancer treated more than three years previously (n=10) and women presenting with breast cancer (n=13). Statistical analysis was by two sample t-test. Healthy control women had significantly higher serum levels of daidzein and genistein than either previously treated or new breast cancer cases.

Healthy Controls Cured Cancers New Cancers

Age/Range 42.7 (30-62) 55.5 (30-64) 49.2 (32-70)
Daidzein ng/ml 6.6 +/- 5.38 3.27 +/- 3.07** 2.18+/- 2.63**
Genistein ng/ml 13.2 +/- 8.55 7.09 +/- 7.08* 2.7 +/- 2.65**

*p < 0.05 **p < 0.005
Low serum phytooestrogen levels may provide a marker of risk for breast cancer and phytooestrogens may be useful in breast cancer prevention.
