Postmenopausal StudiesHormonal Effect of Isoflavones

Frank Rundle House, Royal Hospital for Women, Paddington, NSW 2021 Australia.Our group has a number of studies underway examining the potential hormonal effects of isoflavones. To date, our studies are mostly focused on menopausal women and using endpoints such as serum levels of lutinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, clinical measures including menopause scores as well as the impact on vaginal cytology. Our group has access to two types of product for these studies. Firstly, a tablet derived from red clover produced by Norvet Pty. Ltd. Australia as well as a soy protein produced by Protein Technologies International, St. Louis. At the time of writing this abstract, our main studies were in progress but results will be available for the Brussels meeting. However, a pilot study of 9 women given 160 mgs. of isoflavones for 12 weeks has been completed. These subjects kept a daily flush count as well as a menopausal score (after Greene). Before commencing treatment, these subjects had an average of 6.7 (SD 3.0) flushes per day with average Green score of 18.7 9SD 7.4). After 12 weeks of 160 mgs of isoflavones, the average flush count had reduced to 3.4 (SD 2.6, P=0.02) with a significantly reduced average Greene score of 9.3 (SD 6.7, P=0.002).
In our opinion, isoflavone products are likely to be therapeutically useful for women with mild to moderate menopausal symptoms.
